Company Background
Philip A. Roberts,
our founder, had a vision. After traveling extensively throughout the southern
regions of Italy, and visiting hundreds of restaurants across America, he
imagined a restaurant where people could enjoy vital, vibrant, and powerfully flavored
food. He wanted to create an environment that was fun, witty and welcomed the
Guest into an immigrant, southern Italian family.
The first Buca was
opened in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota in
the summer of 1993.
The site is located in the basement of a brownstone apartment building that
inspired the original name “Buca.” “Buca,” when translated, means basement.
The immediate success
led to the opening of the second and third locations in St. Paul and Eden Prairie,
Minnesota. The popularity of the concept increased and the partners decided to
continue the growth of the company throughout the country. The stores in Seattle,
WA, and Palo Alto, CA were opened under the name “Beppo.” “Beppo” is a
nickname, which in Italian means “Big Joe.” “Big Joe” or “Giuseppi,” is a
fictitious character, created as the inspiration for our concept. As we
continued to grow, we decided to add our authenticity by combining the two
names. So, in 1997, “Buca di Beppo,” or “Big Joe’s Basement” was created.
Buca was purchased by
Planet Hollywood in August 5, 2008, merging two great companies!
